Both white and Red Maeng Da come from the same Maeng Da strain which means "pimp grade" in the Thai language. Red Maeng Da leaves are harvested later than green and White Maeng Da, with the white variety being harvested the earliest of the three types. The difference in leaf harvesting time of the Maeng Da leaves' influence the alkaloid profile and the tempo of the varieties' aroma. Both White and Red Maeng Da are considered to have concentrated alkaloid profiles within their respective vein color categories. The aroma of White Maeng Da is typically faster than that of Red Maeng Da's.
